2024 and 2025 are forecasted to be a perfect time for chasing the northern lights! With the peak of the solar cycle approaching, the opportunity to experience these vibrant auroras is at a high. Picture yourself in a cozy glass lodge watching the incredible aurora borealis. If this sounds like a dream come true, seize the moment and let’s plan your Northern Lights adventure!
Make sure to follow us as we chase the northern lights from Lapland, Finland in March 2025!
Solar Maximum Peak: 2024 marks the apex of Solar Cycle 25, which occurs every 11 years. This heightened solar activity significantly increases the chances of a vibrant and intense Northern Lights display. The sun’s energetic outbursts release charged particles that create captivating auroras illuminating polar skies when they collide with the Earth’s atmosphere.
Increased Visibility: In 2024, Earth’s position enhances the visibility of the Northern Lights. The tilt of our planet’s axis and the solar cycle peak ensure a more pronounced display. Even if you’re not within the Arctic Circle, the increased visibility means you can witness the auroras in more accessible locations.
Tromsø, Norway: Known as the “Gateway to the Arctic,” Tromsø offers an enchanting blend of breathtaking landscapes and optimal Northern Lights visibility. The city’s fjords and cultural vibrancy create a perfect setting for an unforgettable aurora experience.
Fairbanks, Alaska, USA: For a North American adventure, Fairbanks, Alaska is known for its clear, dark skies and spectacular Northern Lights displays. Explore the nearby Chena Hot Springs for a unique experience of watching the auroras from geothermal waters.
Abisko, Sweden: Nestled within the Arctic Circle, Abisko’s microclimate is favorable for viewing the Northern Lights. Surrounded by mountains that shield the area from clouds, this small village offers a high probability of clear skies, further increasing your chances of seeing the auroras.
Reykjavik, Iceland: Combine your aurora adventure with a trip to Iceland. The capital, Reykjavik, is an ideal starting point for exploring the island’s natural wonders while providing a chance to witness the Northern Lights. (See my Iceland Planning Guide HERE!)
Lapland, Finland: Venture to Rovaniemi, the official hometown of Santa Claus, or further north to places such as Levi. Positioned at the Arctic Circle, Lapland offers an excellent chance to witness the Northern Lights amid Finland’s enchanting winter landscapes. This is where we are headed this winter! I will post my full itinerary in my Facebook Group.
Yellowknife, Canada: In the Northwest Territories, Yellowknife is a prime location for chasing the Northern Lights. Its remote setting and minimal light pollution make it an ideal spot for higher visibility.
If seeing the Northern Lights is on your travel bucket list, 2024 and 2025 present the perfect opportunity. Take advantage of the solar cycle that peaks approximately every 11 years!
